A Warm Welcome to "Ghostbase"
Welcome to Ghostbase:
A warm welcome to Ghostbase! Ever since I can remember I have been interested in closed and abandoned airfields and I used to run a website called 'Ghostbase.Org' which I started in late 2000. Sadly I managed to lose the URL a couple of years ago.
I have now moved my photos to a larger Fotopic account so that I can cover a wider range of abandoned airfields and perhaps offer a much higher standard of photography in the future. Most of these photos were 'processed' several years ago, I have about 800 images to upgrade!
Be warned, my airfield visits can often be haphazard and unplanned (with a couple of notable exceptions) and this will be apparent when you navigate my photos. I must stress that I do not trespass or wilfully cause damage when pursuing my hobby.
I hope you like Ghostbase, please do rate any photos that catch your eye and I really do welcome any comments.
Michael
What Does Ghostbase Contain?
Photographs! Each "Ghostbase" has been covered in a different way.
For example my RAF Bentwaters pages contain over 40MB worth of photographs in an attempt to catalogue almost every standing building at this significant former Cold War base.
The United States Navy is represented here by NAS Cecil Field which was researched and photographed by Chris Reilly who used to live at Cecil when it was an active Master Jet Base; Chris's commentary brings the old site back to life.
A chance visit to Selma, Alabama, saw the creation of a page dedicated to the former training airfield Craig Air Force Base. This also contains a couple of Craig AFB photographic contributions, click here Felix Geraets 1952 for an example.
In one case - Mefford Field- the "Ghosts" are the old aircraft that remain on the site as memorials to those who flew from the old WW2 bomber training base.
I am adding further airfields, some with a more detailed commentary.
Ghostbases Now Available On This Site
Please click on the text links in the left hand column to take you to my "Ghostbase" collection index page. Each individual collection can be easily accessed from this thumbnailed index.
New Ghostbases Added 2007!
Salisbury Plain - Imber Village Visit - January 2004
RAF Greenham Common - Crookham Storage Area
RAF Greenham Common - Control Tower
RAF Greenham Common - GLCM Command Centre
RAF Q'rendi - Malta - February 2007
Norton AFB - October 2002
What Else Can We Expect?
Well, I have taken a long break since May 2004 and my enthusiasm is now recharged! I have a lot of new airfields to add to "Ghostbase" and I have started these in May 2007 with a visit to Qrendi which is in Malta. I also need to rescan many of my films so that I can offer photos of a much higher standard.
There was also once a Ghostbase Message Posting Board here but sadly this was hacked and all the contents irretrievably lost. However, you do now have the facility to add comments directly to my individual photographs as well as rating them on a one to ten basis. Hopefully this will make "Ghostbase" more interactive for visitors.
Other Notes
My name is Michael Baldock, I am 48 and live in Surrey, England. My interests include recording what remains now in the early 21st century before former airfields revert to other uses and are lost forever.
I am also an enthusiastic amateur aviation photographer and some of my work can be viewed HERE.
In my 'spare' time I work for South West Trains as a Guard out of Guildford Traincrew Depot, this page GUARD shows me at work.
